Business owners set up shop to achieve success. That success begins years before with positive thinking. People who have positive attitudes are far more likely to see their wishes come true. Have you ever met a very successful person with a bad attitude? No.

Working with reinforcing, happy thoughts in your mind has been shown to yield better results. People have been trying to be successful  since the beginning of time and those who have stayed positive and remained on track have had the best success.

Psychologist William James said many years ago, “We become what we think about most of the time.” Success is not just a key stroke away but rather a lot of hard work and the vision that is reinforced in our minds over and over each day. Envisioning that goal in your mind makes it real in your subconscious mind then your outer self brings it to fruition.

When your starting up your own business some days and good and some days are bad, but pushing through the bad days while carrying hope and envisioning a good result is a far more likely to bring about success.

The successful business owner does research to see if his product is salable in a given area. He does research to see who his clients are and how they spend their money, but happiness is an inside job. Happiness can be obtained by changing the way you think. If you always contemplate and focus on the negative, you’ll feel sad and overwhelmed by life’s obstacles. If you believe today is a good day, then you’ll see it as a good day and have a good day. As the Chief Executive Officer you want to have all good days.

W. Clement Stone co-author of Success through a Positive Mental Attitude stressed using a “positive mental attitude” to achieve success. Stone started out with no father and no money. He went door to door selling casualty insurance. What today is referred to as a cold call, he called a gold call. And with that positive attitude he made money and became very successful. He went on to write more books about achieving success in life. 

The manual de rigueur for all salespeople and entrepreneurs is Napolean Hill’s 1937 book Think and Grow Rich. This book is the classic how to for envisioning your dream and maintaining a positive attitude as life throws you curve balls on your journey to the big leagues. Today, sales training teaches salespeople to speak in the affirmative. Here you’re getting the customer to have a positive attitude and be open to the sale. You get more sales when the customer answers yes for a few questions during the pre-sale. Positive energy is a key ingredient in every aspect of the business. For example: maintaining good relationships with suppliers, labor, investors and clients. The business owner wants to be on good terms with all the components that make a successful business.

Starting a business is like setting to sea on a long voyage: the sailor won’t touch land for many moons and the CEO won’t see a profit for many quarters. Just as a sailor needs a few fundamentals before setting off on any voyage: a sea-worthy vessel, rations and a compass (or GPS), a successful business professional needs a good idea, the proper market and a positive attitude.
